HCA2 cells stably transfected with pAL105 (an episomal vector containing lacZ under the control of the HCMV -2.7 promoter) were infected with HCMV and stained with the chromogenic substrate X-Gal. Infected cells stain blue due to the activated expression of the lacZ reporter gene.
