The Society has funds from which it makes grants to members for specific purposes. Please consult the full rules before applying for a grant. All applications should be submitted to the Grants Office unless otherwise stated.

Postgraduate Student Conference Grants - cover travel and accommodation expenses for attendance at one SGM confernece each year. Applicants must be Postgraduate Student Associate Members resident and registered for a PhD in an EU country. Application form necessary.

Scientific Meetings Travel Grants - limited grants to enable early-career microbiologists to present their work at scientific meetings. Application form necessary. No retrospective applications accepted. Applications accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year.

President's Fund for Research Visits - grants to allow PhD students, resident and registered in the EU, to visit any other country to carry out research in a suitable laboratory in order to carry out a defined piece of research within an existing (or to develop a new) collaboration. The project may be in any field of microbiology.
The visits may be of one to three months duration. The award offers a maximum contribution of £3000 towards the cost of return travel, accommodation, subsistence and consumables in the host laboratory. Application form necessary. An award panel made up of members of SGM Council will consider applications.

Sir Howard Dalton Young Microbiologist of the Year Competition - SGM PG members, presenting a poster or offered paper at an SGM Spring or Irish Division conference, are invited to enter this competition. Selected finalists give a judged short oral presentation on their research to compete for cash prizes. Nomination necessary at time of abstract submission.
Prizes awarded at the SGM Autumn Conference

Microbiology Outreach Prize - awarded annually to recognize and reward the delivery of high-quality outreach activities. Application form necessary.

GRADschool Grants - Limited awards to contribute the full course-fees of a Vitae national personal development residential course. Applicants must be resident and registered for a PhD in the UK. Funds are limited so early application is advised.

Student Society Sponsored Lectures - small grants to cover the travel and other expenses of up to two speakers on microbiological topics each year at student society meetings. Application form necessary.
