Infection Training Support Grants

Purpose

Limited grants are available to support small lab-based microbiology projects to be carried out by SGM members during either foundation or specialty postgraduate medical training.  The grants will contribute a maximum of £3000 towards the consumables costs of short projects lasting no more than 2-3 months full-time (or the equivalent period on a part-time basis).

Rules

  1. All applicants must be paid up members of the SGM of at least 3 calendar months standing before the date of their application for a grant.
  2. Applicants must be medically qualified graduates undertaking either the foundation programme or specialty training in any area of medicine in the UK or Republic of Ireland.
  3. The project must be lab-based and on a microbiological or virological topic.
  4. The nature of the project  may be original research or service evaluation and must last 2 -3 months full-time (or no more then the equivalent period on a part-time basis).
  5. The project may take place at the applicant’s place of employment or at another host laboratory if the applicant wishes to develop expertise in a new area (a letter of support from the host scientist will be required).
  6. A maximum of £3000 (or £1000 per month) is available towards consumables costs only.
  7. All grant recipients must provide a brief project report and statement of expenditure (backed up by receipts/invoices as appropriate) within one month of the project’s completion.
  8. It is a condition of the grant that awardees present their work at an SGM meeting (either as a poster or orally). The Society will offer a grant to cover the cost of registration fees (at member rate) on the day of the relevant session.
  9. Applicants who receive support from other sources that meets their costs in part or in full are required to inform the Grants Office of the amount(s) as soon as possible. If an SGM award has already been paid, then the amount in excess of the stated required sum must be returned.

  12. There will normally be two rounds of application during each calendar year. The next closing date is 16 March 2012.
